The best Minecraft Halloween builds are spooky, mysterious, and glowing from the inside. Haunted houses, giant jack o’lanterns, graveyards, witch huts, and vampire castles are the most popular builds.
This list is current for 2026 (Minecraft Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.50).
Spooky builds look great with darker blocks and some brighter colors. Pick a few blocks like dark oak, deepslate, and cobblestone, then add orange from pumpkins and resin bricks or purple from stained glass and candles. Broken windows, missing roof tiles, and cobwebs in the corners make any build look older and abandoned.
Every build below can be built in survival. Here is our list of the best Minecraft Halloween build ideas for 2026:
1. Haunted House
A haunted house is a popular Halloween build and a tall, narrow, and older house works well. Ours has a square tower with a steep roofs, windows at the front, and a balcony.
Build the main floor using cobbled deepslate or mossy cobblestone and the upper floors from spruce or dark oak planks. Using a lighter plank in the middle adds some depth. Shutters are made using open trapdoors placed flat against the wall and leaving a few open adds a spooky feeling.
Inside our build, jack o’lanterns line the path to the gate and there’s a well with a soul lantern hanging over the water, a scarecrow, and a graveyard on the side. White banners hanging from the balcony look like ghosts at night.

2. Giant Jack o’Lantern House
A pumpkin you can live in is easier to build than it looks. The shape is a squashed ball with shallow steps running up the sides. Use orange concrete for the steps and orange terracotta for the grooves between them. Terracotta is darker, so the ridges still show from far away.
Cut the eyes, nose, and mouth all the way through the wall, then put a layer of ochre froglight right behind the holes with shroomlight behind that. In the daytime the froglight looks like pumpkin flesh, and at night the whole face lights up. Both blocks give off the brightest light in the game, and neither one burns, so there’s no risk of the house catching on fire.
The stem is made from dark oak wood with a campfire on top, so it works as a chimney. Next to it we built a smaller pumpkin cottage with a surprised face, plus a striped pumpkin stand, pumpkin piles by the door, and scarecrows in the patch with jack o’lantern heads that glow at night.
For the pumpkin patch, remember that a pumpkin only grows if its stem has an empty block of dirt, grass, or farmland right next to it. To make a jack o’lantern, use shears on a placed pumpkin to carve it, then craft the carved pumpkin with a torch.
3. Graveyard
A graveyard fits next to almost any other build on this list. Ours has a low stone wall with iron bar panels, a gate with a bell, and a crypt entrance at the back with a round purple window.
Swap around your gravestones so the rows don’t look too straight. Try chiseled stone brick with a slab on top, tall andesite wall, or wider double headstone. For some gravestones, put coarse dirt or rooted dirt in front of them. Bells can’t be crafted, so you’ll need to find one from a village.
Our graveyard also has a grim reaper statue watching the path, with a skeleton skull tucked inside a black wool hood and a scythe made from a fence post and iron bars. Look through the crypt entrance’s iron bar door and you’ll see a stone coffin, an altar of crying obsidian lit with candles, and soul lanterns hanging on chains. 4. Witch Hut
Real witch huts spawn in swamps, and a bigger version over a pond makes a great Halloween base. Our hut stands on stilts with roots around the bottom. The roof is a giant witch hat, made from black terracotta with a purple band, a gold buckle, and a tip that bends to one side.
On the porch, a cauldron sits on top of a lit campfire and smoke rises around it. Build it in a swamp biome and the water in the cauldron turns a murky green. Glow berries hanging under the top floor light up the porch, and firefly bushes along the bank fill with fireflies at night.
Witches only spawn inside a naturally generated swamp hut, so your own hut won’t spawn them. Inside ours, the ground floor is a witch’s workshop with a cauldron in the middle and brewing stands on the shelves, and there’s a bedroom upstairs. Around the pond, we added skull cages hanging from the brim of the hat, candles on the deck railing, soul lanterns along the walkway, skulls on fence posts around the water, and a ritual circle of candles.
5. Pale Oak Manor
The pale garden is Minecraft’s spookiest biome, and its blocks build a manor that looks washed out and abandoned. Our manor is built with pale oak planks for the walls and pale oak logs for the frame, with resin bricks for adding an orange border around the windows.
Pale hanging moss dripping from the roof edges and resin clumps stuck to the walls make it look overgrown. The front garden has eyeblossoms which open at night. The manor also has a gate with lanterns on the pillars, a glowing fountain in the middle of the driveway, and a small graveyard under the trees.
One of the pale oaks by the front path hides a creaking heart. You can craft one from a block of resin and two pale oak logs, and when it’s placed between two pale oak logs, the core turns orange at night and spawns a creaking. If you want the appearance without the mob, don’t place the heart in line with the logs.
6. Vampire Castle on a Cliff
A dark castle on a rocky hill is one of the most impressive Halloween builds you can make. Build the cliff first, then the castle on top. Our landscaping and terraforming guide covers shaping a hill like this one.
Blackstone and polished blackstone bricks give an almost black castle, and a stripe of red nether bricks under every tower matches the red stained glass windows. The tower tops are rings of deepslate tile stairs that go two blocks up for every block in, which makes them tall and thin. To make the windows glow at night, put shroomlight right behind the red glass.
The way in is a long stair up the cliff with soul lanterns on the walls, then a bridge over a small valley to the gatehouse. Inside the walls of our castle, a red carpet leads past candle stands to a throne, and there’s a black hearse waiting in the courtyard, coffins standing by the keep, and wither skeleton skulls give decoration. The fountain in the courtyard is magma blocks under a layer of red stained glass, which glows like a pool of blood. The glass on top also means nobody takes damage walking over the magma blocks.

7. Ghost Ship
A wrecked ship in a quiet cove is spooky in a classic way. The ship frame is built from dark oak and spruce with a stripe of stripped dark oak logs along the side and a few holes above the waterline. The sails are gray and white wool with holes torn in them and ragged bottom edges, and one mast has snapped with its top lying across the deck.
Light your ship with soul lanterns hanging from the masts and sea lanterns behind cyan glass in the captain’s cabin. Glow lichen on the ship frame near the water adds a faint glow, and a skeleton skull on a bone block is the old captain. Build it in a mangrove swamp for murky green water.
Our ship sits on sand in the cove, with cannons along the sides, a skeleton at the wheel, and a pile of gold next to a treasure chest. A wooden dock falls apart as it comes toward the ship, a rowboat lies wrecked on the beach, and across the water there’s a ruined lighthouse still with one blue light burning at the top.
In survival, you can start from a real shipwreck. They generate in oceans and on beaches, and many are already broken.
8. Mad Scientist’s Tower
A tall stone tower with a copper lab and a machine on the roof is a fun Halloween twist on a normal build. The top is cut copper in different weathering stages, with an electricity coil made from lightning rods, copper grates, and end rods sticking out sideways. A lit copper bulb sits at the very top. The build gives a Frankenstein feeling, perfect for Halloween!
Wax each copper block with honeycombs before you place it, or it will keep turning greener over time. A copper bulb’s light also depends on its weathering, with a light level of 15 when new, then 12, 8, and 4 as it oxidizes. The green glow in the tower windows comes from froglights behind lime stained glass.
Inside our lab there’s an operating table with a zombie head on it, specimen jars, and redstone lamps powered by redstone blocks placed in the back wall which stay lit without any wiring. Outside, a giant green Frankenstein zombie statue is chained to a stone slab with lightning rods for the metal in its neck. There’s also a row of dug-up graves and a cart full of coffins behind the tower, which explains where the monster came from.
9. Giant Spider on Its Web
The web is straight lines of cobwebs running out from the center, with rings joining them in a spiral. Hang your web from a thick dead branch stretched between two tall dead trees.
The spider is two lumpy balls of black concrete, black wool, and coal blocks, with a red hourglass on its back. Each leg bends out toward you at the knee and touches the web at the tip and the spider looks like it’s hanging on the web. The eyes are redstone and magma blocks, and the magma glows a little at night.
Our spider has a lair dug into a hill behind the web, with bones and skulls inside and an orange glow from magma deep in the back. Cocoons of white wool and soul lanterns hang from the branches, baby spiders made of black wool and nether brick fences crawl around the ground, and an abandoned cart sits covered in webs.
Collect cobwebs with shears or a Silk Touch tool, because a sword will only drop string. Mineshafts are full of cobwebs and are a good source of them. A Potion of Weaving, brewed with a cobweb, also makes cobwebs appear around any mob that dies while it has the effect.
10. Giant Skeleton Rising From the Grave
A giant skeleton climbing out of the ground is a great Halloween build idea in Minecraft. Only the skull, ribs, and arms show above a pile of coarse dirt, rooted dirt, and gravel. One hand reaches up to the sky and the other pushes down on the ground with its fingers spread out.
The skull copies the shape of a Minecraft skeleton’s head. For the eyes, dig each socket two blocks deep, put soul soil at the bottom, and light it on fire. Soul fire burns blue on soul soil and the eyes flicker in darkness. The ribs are rows of bone blocks with spaces between them so you can see through the chest. Bone blocks rotate like logs when you place them, so make sure that you lay them sideways for arms and ribs. Each bone block uses nine bone meal which is three bones.
In our world, the skeleton has just broken out of the ruined crypt behind it, which still has a staircase leading down into the dark. Cracks full of glowing magma run out across the ground, a soul campfire burns inside the ribcage, a giant coffin lid lies thrown to one side, and a second bony hand is clawing its way up nearby.
11. Haunted Abandoned Campsite
Abandoned camps are one of the newest structures in Minecraft, and they make a good creepy scene because the campers are nowhere to be found. The tents are wool stairs with a wool slab along the top and a straw bed inside. One tent has collapsed while another is torn open with cobwebs in the gaps.
A soul campfire in a ring of cobblestone slabs gives the camp a cold blue glow, with a roasting spit over it and log benches around it. Add cushions for seats, which you craft from three wool slabs of the same color. For the ghost watching from the trees, stack a small column of white wool with black concrete eyes, then hang white banners on every side so they drape down like a sheet.
Around our camp there’s a notice board with a torn poster, dropped gear, upturned canoe, and a ritual circle of jack o’lanterns and candles. A trail of soul lanterns leads off into the trees toward a second ghost.
Straw beds let you sleep through the night without moving your spawn point, but each one only works once. In survival, look for a real abandoned camp in forests, taigas, swamps, and many other biomes. You can find some cobwebs in the barrels and some camps even have a creaking heart.
12. Halloween Decorated House
You don’t always need a new build to celebrate Halloween. Decorating the house you already have is quick, and it all comes down easily once October is over!
Hang orange, black, and purple wall banners in a row under the roof. Stack a carved pumpkin on top of a normal pumpkin by the door and line your pathway with jack o’lanterns. Candles can sit on top of fence posts and a white birch fence with candles looks great at night.
For skeleton lamps, put a skeleton skull on top of a fence post and hang a soul lantern from a trapdoor sticking out of the side. The ghost in our tree is white wool hanging from a chain with white banners around it. Bundles of tall dry grass next to hay bales look like corn stalks, and a cobweb pattern on the side wall makes a home for a spider made of black wool and nether brick fences.

How to Make Any Build Look Spooky
Real spooky and abandoned buildings look a little run down, so take blocks out of the roof, leave gaps in fences, and let a shutter or two fall off. An uneven roofline with one tower taller than everything else looks creepy from far away.
Mix blocks that are dark and similar in color. A wall of deepslate bricks with some cracked deepslate bricks, deepslate tiles, and cobbled deepslate mixed in looks worn out. Move posts and house pillars one block out from the wall and move windows one block in, so the sun makes shadows across the front of the build.
Add some spooky dead trees. Use dark oak wood for the trunk and main branches, and you can add fences for the thin twigs at the ends. Finish them off with some cobwebs.
Pick biomes which are darker and scarier. Dark forests have dark grass, swamps have murky water, and the pale garden turns grass and leaves gray, so the same Halloween build looks better in these biomes.
Soul lanterns are the best all-round light for Halloween builds. They’re dim and blue but still cover a lot of ground. What Happens in Minecraft on Halloween?
Minecraft Java Edition turns on two small Halloween features by itself, using your computer’s date. On October 31, zombies and skeletons (including husks, strays, and wither skeletons) have a 25% chance to spawn wearing a carved pumpkin, and 1 in 10 of those wear a jack o’lantern instead. They still don’t drop the pumpkins or jack o’lanterns, even with the Looting enchantment. From October 20 to November 3, bats can also spawn in brighter spots than usual, at a light level of 6 or less instead of 3 or less.

Frequently Asked Questions
How do you get a skeleton skull in Minecraft survival?
Get a skeleton killed by a charged creeper’s explosion. A creeper becomes charged when lightning strikes near it, and the same thing works for zombie, creeper, and piglin heads. Wither skeleton skulls are different. They have a 2.5% chance to drop when you kill a wither skeleton, plus 1% for each level of Looting on your sword.
Will jack o’lanterns melt snow in a winter Halloween build?
Yes. Snow and ice melt next to any block light above 11, so jack o’lanterns, lanterns, and froglights (all level 15) will melt them. Soul lanterns and soul torches are only level 10 and leave snow alone, which makes them the better choice for a snowy haunted house.
Can you move a creaking heart from a pale garden to your build?
Only with Silk Touch. Mined any other way, a creaking heart breaks into 1 to 3 resin clumps and you lose the block. Breaking a heart while its creaking is out also kills the creaking, which is the easiest way to deal with one that has followed you home.
Does the Halloween pumpkin feature work on a server?
Yes, on Java servers, but it follows the server’s clock instead of yours. If the server runs in a different time zone, the pumpkin heads switch on and off at midnight server time. Bedrock servers and Bedrock Realms don’t have the feature at all.
