The easiest way to get started with modded Minecraft is to get a modpack, which is a bundle of mods that somebody else has already tested for you. Individual mods make more sense later, once you know exactly what you want to change.

Modpacks can be very different and you should pick one that sparks your interest. Tech and automation packs put you in front of machines, power grids, and factories. Some packs start you off with almost nothing and make you build and expand. Adventure and RPG packs add quests, bosses, and proper combat. Kitchen sink packs throw all of it at you at once and you need to decide what to do.

Modpacks use more RAM than regular Minecraft and most modern packs want somewhere between 6GB and 10GB allocated. If a pack crashes on startup, it’s usually because you don’t have enough RAM. You’re also going to need a launcher, those most popular ones are: CurseForge, FTB, and Prism.
