8 Minecraft Windmill Designs to Build

Windmills are a cool Minecraft building idea and make a great addition to farming areas. They can be a bit challenging to build because of the “blocky” nature of Minecraft and the fact that windmills are not very cubic. I think that most people will agree the blades are the hardest part to build!

Since Minecraft does not have any official support for windmills, they are normally built as a decoration near farmland or next to a garden. If you really want a functioning windmill, it is possible to do this with mods! One popular mod for this purpose is “Better with Mods”.

We have put together the best Minecraft Windmill Designs to Build for you to get some inspiration from!

1. Simple Windmill

Here we have a really simple windmill design with a circular structure and large, diagonal blades. This would be a great starting design for use in survival mode (and it uses easy materials as a bonus). For this build, you’ll need cobblestone, wood, stone, and some wool.

As for the interior, there’s many choices available. You could build a staircase or ladder going up through multiple floors, a grinding area, windows, and even decorations like paintings. Below I have included a picture of the interior of this windmill for your reference:

2. Detailed Windmill

This YouTuber says this is a simple windmill design, but I would argue it’s a couple steps above simple! The windmill is beautifully designed with plenty of attention to detail and a nice use of color contrast with a green roof.

The blades on this design look very natural and are a good example of how to build diagonally in Minecraft. For a full guide on how to build this windmill, check out the video above!

3. Rustic Style

I’m not sure if it’s the nice lighting or the curved blades, but this windmill gives off “rustic” vibes! It would look fantastic nearly anywhere, especially next to a town of mostly wooden buildings.

The location of your windmill is an important consideration as well. This one is built right along the edge of a valley, which makes it look taller and more impressive. You could even build a bridge to cross the valley!

4. Classic Design

A more traditional build that looks a little bit more European or medieval in style. This build is fairly low in complexity so it would be easier to build for beginners and in survival mode.

This is a good choice for players who find building diagonally frustrating because the blades are set in an easy-to-build formation.

5. Fantasy

This video shows a tutorial on how to build a more whimsical windmill that looks right out of a fantasy movie. The key elements that make this build more fantasy themed include: a unique rooftop, use of color contrast, and the polished exterior. I can already picture myself brewing some potions inside!

With a themed windmill like this one, the surroundings and the biome can be an important consideration. I think this particular build would look great in a mushroom biome or in a forest.

6. Tall & Narrow

A more tall and narrow windmill design with blades that have some depth to them. This one also has some leaves placed around it for decoration and it is built with an elevated stone foundation. If you wanted to, you could easily build a beacon nearby or even in the roof of this windmill!

I think this particular design would look great if you want a taller windmill to complement your surrounding buildings. It might look a little “out of place” just by itself as shown in the photo.

7. Tower

Do you have castle walls surrounding your Minecraft base? This would be a nice design if you want to integrate a windmill right on the walls!

The top of this design reminds me of a sentry tower where you could carefully watch for mobs or other dangerous approaching your base.

8. House

A unique take on a Minecraft windmill by also incorporating a cottage house at the bottom. This build would be a great idea as a farmhouse or as a mysterious house in the forest.

Another idea could be to build a library inside and do your enchanting in the house!
